The Technology Trap: Why Tools Won’t Fix A Broken Learning Product

L&D loves a shiny new tool. AI-driven learning? Check. Gamification? Yep. Another new platform promising to ‘revolutionise’ engagement? Of course. Sign us up, skipper! But here’s the kicker: none of this will work if your learning product isn’t up to scratch.

We get it, the tech is exciting. The thought of a silver bullet that solves our challenges? Even more so. But throwing a new system, content library or authoring tool at disengaged, apathetic learners is like slapping a fresh coat of paint on a crumbling house. It just isn’t worth the time or effort.

The truth is, if your user experience is clunky, the content isn’t relevant, or learning isn’t aligned to your audience’s needs, no amount of fancy software is going to magically solve the problem. (Sorry not sorry!)

GET TO THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM

Instead of defaulting to ‘let’s buy a new XYZ,’ take a step back. Why aren’t people engaging? Are they drowning in too much content? Is the learning actually useful for their roles? Or is it just another hoop to jump through? Understanding these things will save you from the never-ending cycle of tech fixes.

BEWARE OF TECHNOLOGY BLOAT

Ever felt like you have 27 different learning tools but still can’t find what you need? That’s tech bloat. Too many platforms, dashboards, and content libraries can make learning more overwhelming, not better. Simplification is your best friend.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE PEOPLE

Engagement isn’t about chasing vanity metrics. It’s about making learning meaningful, relevant, and (dare we say) enjoyable. The goal isn’t just to get people clicking, it’s to help them learn and grow.

TIE IT BACK TO THE BUSINESS

At the end of the day, L&D isn’t just about training, it’s about impact. Learning initiatives should align with actual business challenges, not just exist for the sake of it. If your programme isn’t moving the needle, it’s time to rethink.

THE BEST LEARNING STRATEGIES KEEP IT SIMPLE

Technology is a tool, not a magic fix. Want better engagement? Focus on what actually matters: user experience, relevance, and a learning culture that makes sense. Get that right, and you won’t need to keep chasing the next big thing.
